Verte: Absinthe conceptual packaging design

verte absinthe packaging
I was going through my hard drive this past Thanksgiving weekend, and decided that I should start posting some of the design work I have done in the past.

I came up with a design for Absinthe, a flavored dilsilled liquor, emerald green in color, turning to cloudy, opalescent white when mixed with water. This liquor is derived from Wormwood, that contains little traces of thuojone that is associated to giving people hallucinations. This drink was widely popular amongst artists and writers back in the 19th-early 20th century in Europe. Because this psychoactive properties of this drink, it has been banned in the United States.

The concept of this packaging design was to capture the psychoactive properties by utilizing the optical illusion design patterns on the back of the bottle. Because of the way the glass bottle and liquid distorts the label, pattern appears to mimic the trait of thujone. I wanted to capture the sophistication and the darkness of this bottle by getting inspirations from the controversial European cafes that served these drinks amongst writers and artist. I wanted it to be bohemian, mysterious, psychedelic, and completely out of this world.

I took this class through Art Center at Night with Dan Hoy, who is an amazing instructor. Since I'm an alumi, I got 50% off the tuition price. I took this class for fun, but this class would be great for students who want to build an entrance portfolio.
