Beer tasting in San Diego, California

Iron Fist Brew Co
Micro breweries are spouting out of industrial buildings in Northern County of San Diego. So, far there are at least 34, and more are in the works according to San Diego Brewer's Guild. If you love beer, forget Sea World and the Zoo...and see what the local are up to.

Even though these places are small and and unknown, I've been hearing about them through our main source- Joe who lives in North County San Diego city named Vista. So Paul and I decided to venture out during our Thanksgiving weekend to have a full day of beer tasting. Our friend/guide Joe, had an intense schedule for us.

First stop: Karl Strauss Brewing Company in Carlsbad, CA

I can get into all the specifics here but the Red Trolley was our favorite. Light tasting, with a heavy body, and a smooth finish.

Second stop: Iron Fist Brewing Company

Most of the beers we've seen gets aged in these Whiskey barrels. According to Joe: Whisky barrels by law in the United States are only allowed to be used once to distill Whisky. So beer brew masters snatch these up from the Whisky distilleries to be used to flavor and to age the beers.

Third Stop: Oceanside Ale Works

Definitely a local joint. We tried the San Luis Rey Red, a 6.0% malty red ale, a local favorite according to their black board.

Fourth Stop: Green Flash Brewing Company

As noted, an IPA champion, so most of their brews had a really crisp and bitter characteristics. I love their machines they brew beer with.

Check out their bottler. So cool.

This is what's called a Growler. It is a half gallon glass bottle you can take with you to the brewery of your choice and get it filled or refilled with your favorite beer.

One of the last stops: Port Brew Company or known as the Lost Abbey

Now this place had a more of a bar atmosphere. We tried the Shark Attack and I realized that deep inside, I personally favored the red ales that has moderate caramel malt accents that is sweet and smooth.

Overall, I had a great time, and I must admit, there are so many varieties that I love that I can't really place a favorite. I realized that my palette prefers down the line medium strength beer with smooth and sweet finish. IPA beers a little bit harsh for me- maybe it's better paired with food.

Like wine tasting, beer tasting gives you a flavor of the town, the people, the vibe, and the passion and culture that comes to perfecting the best concoction. Beer is not for everyone, but it is so boggling to know that there can be so many variations of flavors and depth to rattle your taste buds.

Thank you Joe, so being our wonderful guide and friend.
