Langer's Delicatessen Restaurant- Jen's favorite hole in the wall restaurant series
I can say with confidence that Langer's has the best pastrami sandwich I have ever eaten- yes, even better than in New York. So great that I'm willing to drive down to a shady part of Downtown, LA near the famous Alvarado Street (Random street guy whispering, "ID, ID, you need ID?")
But once inside, the restaurant transforms itself to a delicatessen that was established by the Langer family in 1947. From old school counter that stretches to the length of the restaurant, retro chairs, and the loyal clientele packed inside, Langers truly does embody what the downtown neighborhood was 60 years ago. Langers didn't change, but the neighborhood outside did.
Bernie, Paul's brother just returned home from his job in Afghanistan. He had been craving Langers since he left home 6 months ago. The photo on right is Paul's malt chocolate shake.
When you go, you have to try the famous #19 sandwich. Perfectly thick, peppered, and tender hot pastrami topped with russian dressing, their homemade coleslaw, a slab of swiss cheese on a warm crusty rye bread. Ask for a side of au jus side to dip this into. Oh, my, this is heaven!
To emphasize how great this is, this is the french dip version of their famous pastrami. Look at how thick the slices are!
Like their sandwich, the restaurant embodies a warm and a positive vibe. Another parting shot of the famous #19 before it gets devoured...

Note: This restaurant is in a really seedy part of town. There is parking in the back, but it's usually packed. Bring quarters for street parking, and remember to stay safe, travel in a group, and be aware of your surroundings. But if you're like me, I will travel for food.
