2011 International Quilt Festival, Long Beach California
My latest obsession is sewing, so I decided to go to the International Quilt Festival in Long Beach, CA that happened to be in town for a huge tradeshow. From vendors to exhibits that feature quilt designs from all around the world, I was able to see the best of the best. Few designs and craftmanship that caught my eye from the show.
What is old is now new. I was really blown away by how this craft has exploded into a modern art medium. At one glance from far away, I felt like I was looking at a painting. But like oil paintings, once you look closer at the image, you can look at the intricate layers of fabric and embellishments and stitch techniques that are so well put together, like you would a paint stroke. As a graphic designer, my favorites were graphic and traditional folksy designs that had large block of colors but I was intrigued by abstract pieces created especially by Pamela Allen. How am I going to use this as inspiration? I really don't know at this moment, but I know now how far I can go with sewing- which is limitless.
